Half Moon Bay says...
The music... This is seen by many as the definitive
Mott the Hoople record; at the time if someone had one
Mott album in their collection, this was the one. Well,
it did have two hit singles on it. And it's a very strong
record, laden with goodies, fine performances all round
and self-produced. Just a pity it led to Ralphs leaving
the band. It is available these days as a budget priced
CD through Castle and also as part of the Sony/Columbia
Rewind series. You won't be disappointed.
The artwork... The artwork on the original has
quite a history; When it first appeared it was in a gatefold
sleeve: the front had the head shape cut-out to reveal
a cellophane sheet that had the dotted face shading image
printed on it. Inside the gatefold revealed a busy and
interesting collage of shots. The inner sleeve had the
lyrics printed on it. Later CBS did away with the celaphane
sheet - I have one of these sleeve - but it was still gatefold
and still had the cut-out. In later re-pressings, the gatefold
disappeared and a sleeve similar to the one shown in the
scan above (taken from the Castle release) appeared.
