Overend Watts
History
Pete 'Overend' Watts assumed the writing mantle once Hunter left.
The band carried on - what else do you do when its all you've done
since you left school?
Recruiting Ray Major - who was originally going to replace Ralphs
in 1973 but management didn't see eye-to-eye - on guitar and Nigel
Benjamin on vocals, Watts, Buffin and Fisher changed the band name
to Mott and released an album called 'Drive
On', containing material almost entirely from the pen of Watts.
And jolly good it was too. Some would say that it was not in Hunters
league, but I'm not so sure. At the time it was truly uplifting
stuff and still sounds good today.
A second Mott album followed in 1976, 'Shouting and Pointing'
and although possibly stronger than the debut, it again failed
to impress a public looking for something new. Benjamin quit and
the old soldiers recruited John Fiddler of Medicine Head as a replacement.
They also incurred another name change and came out under the banner
of British Lions.
They released a couple of albums, one high profile the other sunk
without trace because by then, Britain's music press and record
buyers were not interested in anything with pre-punk revolution
links and the merest hint of long hair…
Overend is alive, well and at home in Herefordshire, England,
but keen to keep a distance between himself and his old profession.
That said, he made a storming 'comeback' as part of the reformed
The Silence for the wonderful 'Shotgun
Eyes' project and is rumoured to be considering recording some
solo stuff. But don't expect to see Pete on stage as part of a
Mott reunion…
